Nintendogs falls into the strange category that Nintendo has defined as non-games, that is, titles that do not fall into the usual canons to offer the user novel experiences, such as Electroplankton, a game of creating music interacting with the medium, or that other phenomenon of sales that are the Brain Training, games of mental training. In the case at hand, this is partially true, because although there is no end as we usually understand it, the truth is that a goal is set: get all the dogs.
Woof! Woof!
The plot is very simple and does not exist. Players find 1000 credits to use in cities where only the above dogs or accessories can be purchased. Needless to say, the first step is to visit a kennel. Here you make the first choice of the game: the breed of your dog. Nintendo, creator of the Pokemon series, knows marketing well and has offered three different cartridges for sale: Dachsund, Labrador and Chihuahua. Each card initially has six different dog breeds available. The remaining twelve can be unlocked in two different ways: the simplest is visiting friends who have a different version of the game. On the occasion of the visit it is possible to exchange gifts that are chosen from the numerous objects available in the game during. At the end of the Wireless connection, both players find in the kennel the breed of the four-legged just known, clearly only if it is a breed not already available. The second possibility is more laborious, and involves the achievement of score 'thresholds'. Every player action, every command given to the dog, contribute to increase the player's 'Trainer Rating'. Every 2000 points a new race is released.

What a nice puppy !!!
When you buy a dog, you are at home. The first furniture varies by version, but then you can buy different furniture at a higher price. The first operations are guided: the name chosen for the puppy is requested, which must be repeated several times in the microphone, and the first command is given: sitting. The training sequence is simple. Use the stylus to assign commands to your dog (there is a full list available for download on the net, the basic guide is available in the game), and associate the name of the command with the action. After a certain number of repetitions of the sequence depending on the 'difficulty' of the command, the dog learns the given order. From this moment, it is enough to verbally pronounce what the cute puppy was taught and confirm its execution.
Funny .. now what?
The second step is to purchase the items necessary for the creature: food, water but also shampoo and some toys. The development of the animal is determined by two factors: the character, specified at the time of purchase, and the training (in addition to the actual training, the time spent with the dog counts). The possible operations, with the virtual puppy, are no different from the attentions required by a real puppy. After feeding it, one must take it out so that it can 'fulfill' its needs. During the exit, he will mark the territory abundantly, if male, and will also leave some 'gifts' to be collected with a quick gesture of the stylus (it is not clear if there are consequences for the most uncivilized owners); moreover, not least, he will meet his fellow men. The outcome of these matches is never defined, but in case of a positive conclusion, that is, the two dogs do not squabble, the player's score increases. The walk can also take you to the Discount Shop, the shop that sells everyday items at lower prices, and to the park, where our puppy will meet other four-legged friends.
Technically speaking, the game's graphics engine doesn't have a lot of work to do and therefore it behaves more than discreetly. The cute little dogs are always well built. The two-dimensional backgrounds are sometimes poorly characterized. The physics of objects is well cared for, even if their range, for example of the frisbee, remains rather limited. The soundtrack is composed of a limited number of bases, each of which underlines a moment of the game (home, walk, race). During the walks it is possible to find, among the gifts scattered on the street, records that can be heard at home. The lullaby, for example, promotes the sleep of puppies. The music on the whole is well composed, even if, perhaps, the walk is a bit repetitive.
Nintendogs is a well-made simulator that is affected by the repetitiveness inherent in the activity represented. Of course, it's fun to see your puppy, caress it with the nib and see how attentive it is to voice commands. However, that something capable of keeping the master owner interested for a long time is missing, that is, the lack of unpredictability that only a real dog can give. A game definitely worth seeing and with remarkable technical skills (Nintendo has accustomed us to quality) but which leaves a bitter taste in the mouth, unless you manage to get deeply passionate about it.
